The Friends of the Ocala Public Library was formed in 1980. Through sales at the book market, quarterly book sales, and other fundraising efforts, the Friends have been able to make significant contributions to the Marion County Library Headquarters.  In 2004, the new library building was the beneficiary of a $250,000 grant for the furnishing of three meeting rooms, including a sound system, and staff lounge.

The Friends are major contributors to children and teen programs, and numerous other events at the library.  Friends support library staff through educational grants and provide the community with information on library programs through WORDS Magazine.

The Friends of the Ocala Library advocate for the library in our community and with local and state legislators.
