Wrap up Women’s History Month with a special presentation that examines the power of friendships. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings had a lot to learn about Florida when she first moved here from Rochester, NY in 1928. She gained perspective from her network of support, including close “Cracker” friend, Dessie Smith Prescott and fellow celebrated author, Zora Neale Hurston. Steinshouer shares stories and photos from the lives of these remarkable women, all three now honored in the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame.
Betty Jean Steinshouer first came to Florida with “Willa Cather Speaks” in 1989 and has since toured 43 states presenting Chautauqua-style programs on women authors, homelessness in literature, Ernest Hemingway, America at War, Jim Crow Florida, and marriage equality. Steinshouer was named a Fellow in Florida Studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2004 and her book about Willa Cather, Long Road from Red Cloud, was awarded the 2020 International Book Award for biography.
Funding for this Florida Talks program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
